Week 1: Foundations of Forensic Medicine

Class 1:

Introduction, history, and scope of forensic medicine; medical jurisprudence; role of MCI.

Class 2:

Court procedures (summons, warrant); types of witnesses and inquests

Class 3:

Court evidence – oral and documentary (medical certificates, medico-legal reports, dying declaration); recording of evidence; doctor’s conduct in the witness box; IPC sections related to injuries.

Week 2: Death and Its Medico-Legal Implications

Class 4:

Definition and types of death – natural, unnatural, sudden death; suspended animation; moment of death; brain death.

Class 5:

Modes of death – coma, syncope, asphyxia; manner of death – natural vs. unnatural; time since death

Class 6:

Medico-legal aspects and causes of death – asphyxia, starvation, electrocution, accident-related deaths; drowning – Diatom test, Gettler test, and chemical tests.

Week 3: Post-Mortem and Autopsy Procedures

Class 7:

Post-mortem examination – definition, types; legal requirements for autopsy; post-mortem artefacts; preservation of viscera.

Class 8:

Examination of mutilated bodies/fragments, bundle of bones, and exhumation procedures.

Post-mortem changes – Algor mortis, lividity, rigor mortis, stiffening, cadaveric spasm, putrefaction, mummification, adipocere formation
